This course naturally follows on from the initial course ‘Traditional Lampshade Making’. Over the 2 days students will make a ‘Swathed pleated’ bowed empire shade. There will be further discussion/demonstration on how to make a ‘Gathered’ shade and add trimming/embellishments to the lower edge. See COURSE PROGRAMME below ..
On completion of this course students will be awarded an Accredited Certificate. Victoria Hammond Academy is accredited by AIM Awards, which is an approved British Awarding Body, regulated by Ofqual.
You can either make payment in full, or deposit payment. A deposit payment is required to secure your place on a course. Balance payment is then due to be settled at least 14 days prior to the course start date. It is possible to decide attendance dates at a later time subject to availability on scheduled courses running – select from the option below ‘dates to be decided’.
All course fees are inclusive of specialist machinery/products, designer fabrics, comprehensive step-by-step manual and refreshments. Bovingdon village is within walking distance and has a selection of food stores. You are also welcome to bring a packed lunch. Free parking on site at Bury Farm.
Courses run from 9:30am to 5pm. Tea/coffee served at 9:15am. We are on-site from 9am.

ADVANCED TRADITIONAL LAMPSHADE MAKING
Trainer: Angela Constantinou
Angela is an inspiring talented lady; she studied at a renowned university in London, where she now regularly tutors. She works on residential and commercial commisions in and around London. She has worked with companies and designers that include Robert Young Antiques, Mockbee & Co and Dutch interior designer, Rutger Hopster.
This course is only open to those that have attended our Traditional Lampshade Making course. Each student will need to know how to bind the frame and create a balloon lining.
Over the 2 days students will make a ‘Swathed pleated’ bowed empire shade. There will be further discussion/demonstration on how to make a ‘Gathered’ shade and add trimming/embellishments to the lower edge.
- Discussion on appropriate fabrics for these shades.
- Marking and creating pleats accurately, and ‘cheats’.
- Working with and the importance of the straight grain.
- Appropriate and different ways to achieve fullness for gathering shades dependent on fabric type and shade size.
- Finishing the pleats neatly (without using any sewing).
- Create a balloon lining.
- Make a flip down trim to upper edge of shade.
- Discussion/demonstration on how to attach trimming/embellishments to lower edge of shade.
